Kermit Tully nominated as Hand

Fire & Blood

Kermit Tully nominated as Hand was one of several candidates considered when the lords assembled to choose a new Hand for the underage Aegon III. Though his name was put forward, the lords rejected him as too young, leaving the office to Torrhen Manderly.

The Assembly and Its Stakes

The choice took place at a gathering called to appoint new regents until Aegon III came of age. The lords spent more than a fortnight failing to agree on regents, with old grievances and the still-healing divisions of the Dance shaping their deliberations. They ultimately chose three regents by lot, but did not leave the more consequential selection of the Hand to those new appointees.

Candidacy and Rejection

Kermit Tully nominated as Hand was proposed alongside Alyn Velaryon. Both were considered too young for the office. Benjicot Blackwood was ruled out for the same reason, while supporters of Unwin Peake’s return were quickly shouted down after Prince Viserys argued that his brother preferred a younger man less likely to fill the court with traitors. The passage gives no further account of Kermit’s response or of who advanced his name.

The Choice of Torrhen Manderly

The lords instead turned to Torrhen Manderly, Lord of White Harbor. He was little known to many of those assembled, a quality that helped make him a viable compromise: he had no enemies south of the Neck, except perhaps Unwin Peake, whose memory of past grievances was long. Torrhen accepted the office but asked for a treasurer capable of dealing with the Lyseni and their bank. Kermit’s exclusion thus belongs to a wider contest over age, factional acceptability, and the practical demands of governing during the regency.
